COMMUNICATION AND DECISION MAKING PROCESS
Making decisions the right way is very essential for the smooth functioning of any organisation. There are times when decisions have to be taken individually for the benefit of all. Decision making is a big responsiblity and definitely calls in for leadership skills. Certain decisions when taken may bring in change of functioning and adds extra load of work and responsibility. I have been with the present school for 12years and I have seen changes year after year. Changes with the infra-structure,adminstration, teaching faculty, hirearchy and in the teaching and learning process. In fact the changes that have happened in the teaching and the learning process has been highly beneficial. New opportunities were created in the technological setting of my school. We were able to reduce 10% use of paper on account of the GEMS Learning Gateway portal. This in fact helped us to show through our mini action research in our recent HSBC ECO-SCHOOL project inspection, that the school was able to save on paper. Change in our policies, lesson plans, mode of communication etc have benefitted the students and teachers to a great extent.
In my Middle-school department, I keep revieiwng and making changes according to the current needs. I believe in the fact that we need to move and keep pace with the changing lifestyles and adapt ourselves accordingly. However, we also need to review and study if methods implemented are productive and successful. Finding suitable strategies to redefine and reshape the exsisting changes is mandatory. The global question that needs to be asked is "Has everyone benefited from the changes made? Has it helped in scaling up standards? What best practices have it instilled in everyone? Till date, I have never resisted change, as it has been working out very well with my department. I LIKE CHANGE AND ALL PROJECTS THAT I HAVE INITIATED IN MY SCHOOL HAVE ALWAYS SEEN CHANGE YEAR AFTER YEAR.
Effective communication is as important as the decision making process. Good comunication in whatever mode it can be is very essential as it engages all those concerned to be a part of every day life and working conditions. In the past, my regular communication to teachers used to be through circulars or face to face meetings once a month. Thanks to technology, for the past few years, I have been sending mails to my staff. LAST YEAR I STARTED A BLOG TO COMMUNICATE WITH MY TEACHERS ON ISSUES RELATED TO TEACHING AND LEARNING, PARENT INTERACTION, CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT SKILLS AND OTHER IMPORTANT ISSUES. I AM STILL IN THE PROCESS OF MAKING MY COMMUNICATIONS MORE EFFECTIVE, SO THAT TEACHERS BENEFIT.
Apart from this, teachers meet me during break time or at their free time to discuss on professional issues. As far as my meetings with the senior leadership is concerned, it happens every week and the minutes of the meetings are circulated. I believe that, formal communications work more effectively than the informal kind, in my school .
