Effective teams successful factors are people, participation and partnership
TEAM WAS VIEWED AS A WAY OF POOLING A NUMBER OF PEOPLE'S EXPERTISE(Senge1993)
Working in a team gives joy when each understands the strengths and weaknesses of every member who constitute the team. Each members contribution is of great importance for an organisation to be successful. We are aware that in large organisations there are many teams who work towards achieving the common goal ,though the role and contribution made by each team is different.
I work in a school that has a strength of 9000 students. There are various teams operating for different purposes . We have various committess who function in a team to complete the assigned task. The team leaders identify and specify the role to the team members after gauging thier abilities and skills. Most of the time, it has been noted that the members co-operate and try to complete the work. However, when conflicts arise, it is handled by the team leader in an amicable manner. When I reflect on to my qualities as a team leader, and a member, I have realised that I have improved and grown through my years of experience. They were times when I executed coerchive approach while resolving issues or given way and made whatever concessions were necessary to dispel the opposition. But in course of time ,I realised my weaknesses. I started learning to work collaboratively with my team understanding that each has a talent and I need to draw the best from every member, than doing everything by myself. . In the past, I never enjoyed a conflicting situation whether it was formal or informal. My reactions to the conflict would either be flight or fight depending on the situation. I could never say NO to anything or defy the views given by others in the team. In course of time, by observing the repercussions and consequences that I had to face on account of my inablity ,I determined to change my ways of functioning. I have turned out to be an assertive leader and learnt to say NO politely ,when I have to . I also communicate to my members effectively to make them understand the pros and cons of a problem ,so that they learn , as what is best for the organisation. I try to use most of the assertive techniques such as emphatic, discrepancyand responsive to solve issues. Bell ( 1992)definition on team work is very apt and it is mandatory for a team to have all the qualites mentioned by him i;e- shared perception,a common purpose, agreed procedures,commitment,co-operation ,resolving disagreements openly by discussion etc.
Belbin's article on team roles in a nutshell is very true till date. The triats of each team worker is well described.
Review of the Belbin TEAM ROLES questionnaire :
I was very geninune in marking the scores . I scored 13 for PL, 11for ME and 10 for I and SH. I realised that I have the triats of a plant dominating more than the other 3 qualites ( Monitor evaluator,Implementor and Shaper). I agree with the scores that I have acquired under each trait. Belbin's Questionnaire gives a true picture of an individual's traits ,if it is marked accurately. I do have plant qualites when intiating projects and solving major issues of my department. I have inspired many students and teachers in building OUR OWN into a sustainable school ,and have initiated projects under the Eco-club in understanding the burning environmental issues. I am glad that the creative ideas sown in for the past few years is being recognised . Today, the world is only talking on building sustainalbe schools and practices. I do argee the negative traits that I have as a plant. Being sensitive and short-tempered whenI am criticised on my ideas are my main negative traits. They were times when I used to refuse to work further . I am no more the same. I understand my mistakes and have learnt to take corrections, on the areas where I need to improve ,to become a good team leader and a team player.
